I think people underestimate the importance of a good title track

I am not saying the title track is necessarily the best song on the album or that you shouldn’t check out b-sides. I am saying that first impressions matter. When I see fans use the b-sides as an excuse to defend an album with a bad title track to casual fans/listeners complaining I laugh because a title track is supposed to be the highlight of the release and the song that best represents the group in the album so if a title track is bad do you really think someone who’s not a fan will have much faith in the b-sides? If you go to a restaurant and you don’t like the main dish would you go back to try the appetizers, even if they are delicious?

That’s how it works. A casual listener is less likely to check the bsides if the title track is bad even if the bsides are genuine gems and they’re more likely to check them out if the title track is good, even if the bsides aren’t as good.

This is also why I think groups purposefully releasing bad title tracks accompanied by quality bsdies are doing themselves a disservice. The title track should represent the overall quality of the album otherwise good quality songs will get written off and overshadowed
