As an Indian, LOVED Lara for the Sindoor accesory! Here’s why.

I’m an Indian based in North India (UttarPradesh, Kanpur District), and obviously, I’ve been very well apprised of all these cultures. One might think, why am I going in an opposite direction, contrary to those Indians who’ve recently been bashing Lara for the Sindoor…

The reason is plain and simple. The Patriarchy and Misogynistic repackaging around this practice.

I belong to the Brahmin Caste in Hinduism, my sister recently got married, and had to wear LOADS of marital accessories, specially Sindoor, huge heavy bangles, toe rings, huge nose ring, etc. (The list could go on and on). While, her husband had to wear NOTHING. NOTHING AT ALL. She was screeching in pain cause her toe rings were literally ripping off her skin, heavy application of Sindoor had literally gotten into her eye and she was severly uncomfortable the whole time.

In short, these practices, including wearing Sindoor, is DEEPLY associated with the Patriarchy in our Indian/Hindu society. A woman has to wear Sindoor as a sign of her being “married” and as if “someone’s property, don’t hit on me” kind of a gesture. While the male significant can roam around without such obstructions. She has to wear huge bangles everywhere, and obviously the toe rings as well, though it’s always highly uncomfortable for her.

The reason I’m glad is because, Lara has literally challenged this centuries old practice of marking married women as property, by rebellion, and wearing it unmarried as a LITERAL CHOICE. Main thing about Sindoor is that women rarely have a “choice”. It’s always forced upon them by in laws and family members. It’s so good to see this thing being challenged.

The amount of people hating are just spewing their internalized misogyny at this point. I repeat it again. THERE’S NO NEED TO PRESERVE AND RESPECT THE PRACTICES WHICH DEHUMANISE WOMEN IN OUR CULTURE. Period.

We need to keep challenging the practices in our culture, no matter how significant they may hold today. Love you, Lara!
