I don’t hate KATSEYE and this isn’t even meant as a drag, but their lyrics are basically the stereotype people who don’t listen to Kpop have of Kpop lyrics.
Like when people make fun of Kpop and act like every song is just random trendy English words, internet slang, repetitive hooks and lyrics that are more about sounding catchy than actually meaning anything… that’s KATSEYE.
And obviously Kpop does have songs like this. I’m not pretending it doesn’t. A lot of title tracks especially can be like that. “LIKEY” by TWICE is an obvious example. But that’s not what all Kpop sounds like lyrically and once you get into the b-sides there’s usually way more variety.
With KATSEYE it feels like that stereotype is basically their whole lyrical style. “Touch” and “Gabriela” are more standard pop songs, but then you get stuff like “Gnarly”, “Internet Girl”, “Hootie Frutti” where it feels like someone asked a non-Kpop listener to parody what they think a Kpop song sounds like.
Again, I like them. I just need their writers to discover sentences sometimes.
