I’m genuinely curious about what others think. I’m not saying K-pop or BTS are talentless—they obviously have talented artists. My issue is more with some fans and the way they behave.
I’ve seen BTS/K-pop fans act as if nobody in the world is more talented than their idols—best singers, best dancers, best musicians, etc. Appreciating your favourite artists is completely fine, but treating them as objectively superior to everyone else feels toxic.
Another thing I find a bit cringe is when some fans start adopting Korean culture solely because their favourite artists are Korean—learning Korean, changing the way they eat, using chopsticks, etc. Learning a new language or being interested in another culture is great, but doing it mainly because your favourite celebrity comes from that country seems strange to me. My favourite singer is Kishore Kumar, who was from West Bengal—does that mean I should suddenly learn Bengali and only eat Bengali food? 😭
What I find even more confusing is when some fans know about the problems and racism that can exist in Korean society, yet still describe Korea as their “dream country” mainly because their favourite idols are from there.
Again, I’m not saying K-pop itself is bad or that its artists lack talent. I just feel that some fans’ behaviour contributes to making K-pop and BTS seem much more overrated than they actually are.
