Disclaimer: There is a lot of K-pop groups that have made a lot of influence and impact towards the K-pop industry and Hallyu Wave from what I have researched. This post is more about the reactions of a lot of K-pop fans towards the third-generation K-pop acts than the second-generation K-pop acts.
Inside the discussion of impact and influence, there a lot of K-pop fans that are more likely to acknowledge the impact of the first and second generation than the third generation. This is not to say that influential third generation groups don’t get acknowledged as groups like Twice and EXO have had many fans and non-fans admit their impact and influence on K-pop. However, often times, when it comes to the global popularity of K-pop, there tends to be hesitance and somewhat a refusal of an acknowledgement when it comes to the groups that had contributed to that rise. Now, compared to influential first- and second-generation K-pop acts, there have been a lot of influential groups that have contributed to making what K-pop is today and inspiring new generations into becoming idols. Groups like Seo Taji and Boys, H.O.T., SNSD, Bigbang, 2NE1, Super Junior, Wonder Girls, Shinee, TVXQ, and more have had their impact and contributions towards the Hallyu Wave acknowledged by K-pop fans inside of the community.
However, when it comes to the impact of influential third generation K-pop groups there seems to be this pushback or comments like “They were just lucky”, “Our groups didn’t have social media during their generation”, “They weren’t the first to do it,” and more. For example, BTS is often considered the biggest music act to come out of South Korea and is considered one of the biggest artists in the world by global mainstream media outlets. When it comes to their huge contributions to making K-pop globally, there are a lot of non-fans who seem to have this huge pushback in acknowledging how BTS had helped K-pop globally and instead often use the comments I had mentioned above to describe their popularity in the USA. Another example is Blackpink (another group that has played a part in K-pop’s popularity globally), as their impact and influence amongst girl groups are often pushed back especially when it comes to the topic of the girl crush concept. There is even this running joke about whenever there is an industry poll/list about popularity and impact inside of the K-pop industry, commenters would say “K-pop Reddit fans” aren’t going to like this whenever Blackpink appears on that list.
This is not to say that these factors aren’t true, but it feels like K-pop fans only sees these factors towards the groups’ success globally hence why the level of acknowledgement is low.
