And at the same time they are too greedy with appealing to mainstream lol. I want to debate about this topic mostly in case of big companies but I feel it’s pretty general trend.
We have recently two debuts from big companies Ourbirthday and Tuide. Very nice debuts but discovering America? Obviously none of these group didn’t present something we haven’t seen. Maybe I’d put a bit higher Sun kiss because jazz it’s indeed pretty unutilized in k-pop but despite that this debut doesn’t really make impression of freshness. Maybe it’s too early to say but I don’t have feeling of any “earthquake” in the industry.
And someone seeing that similar thoughts on one reddit’s post answered that you can’t really be unique in k-pop nowadays. Sorry but it’s bullshiting lol. Yes, we have seen a but definitely not all, there are a lot unutilized both concept and genres and k-pop companies always tend to chase trends so we often get multiple version of the same songs or concept in certain period. And especially often they sin this way towards GG’s because GG’s are mosty marketed to be general public darlings.
But I don’t really understand this strategy 100% even from business point. If companies make decision to debut many groups shouldn’t they try to find good, characteristic niche just for them at least until competitors catch up. Unless it’s indeed lucrative enough to treat k-pop as fast fashion and replace girls with new faces in the period of 2-3 years. Still I think if GG especially from big companies go a bit against mainstream k-pop trends but with good product, they probably win on that. That’s what history tell me. Because GG has always easier with public so being a bit different shouldn’t be a problem.
Simply k-pop companies avoid full commitment with concept. If they have interesting aesthetic music genre choice is boring and so-so matching concept. Or they change genre only on main releases why album is typical k-pop mix. I feel market is in the place which needs more groups like Redvelvet which has both specific concept, sounds, aesthetic which mix well together. Nowadays everything is extremely professional made but totally lack of boldness and uniqueness/clear group personality. They produce groups which maybe you feel more like to listen than stan unless they indeed have some kind interesting personalities in the team like Rescene.
And before someone that it’s sentimental talking, I observe k-pop enough to say we indeed had such periods already like ending of 3rd gen and beginning of 4th when on one hand we got a lot big GG’s what probably was ended by closing China for k-pop and next some girl’s crush wannabes.
I would say last time when k-pop was a bit more advantageous with GG’s was beginning of 2020 by when we got more daring debuts especially from smaller companies. They knew they have to somehow stand out while big companies seem to think they somehow manage with following trends than create them. I don’t see as well ambition to push the group at the top.But is that really good strategy when both physical and tour sell worse?
Companies clearly feel crisis breath that’s why we have seen combined comebacks of GG’s from the same companies and even collaboration song from Hybe plus this idea of k-pop festival. I don’t think it’s time to play safe because at some point group like XG from other country industry breakthrough. It matters of time if k-pop shows white flag with their rookies. It’s quite boring, guys. Maybe you disagree but that’s my feelings.
