The model gave a 57 per cent probability of clearing 90, and a 90 per cent chance of beating 86.7. So it is a coin flip with a lean, not a prophecy. I like that honesty. Most forecasts pretend to a confidence the data cannot support.

Read that list again. Blood pressure. Weight. Cigarettes. Food as a child. Seeing a doctor when something feels wrong.

There is no cold plunge on it. No fasting window, no nootropic stack, no red light panel. The stuff that moves a whole nation’s lifespan is the stuff we all already know about and mostly cannot be bothered with, because knowing something and doing it for forty years are different sports.

The number almost nobody checks

If one item on that list deserves your attention this week, it is blood pressure.

Cardiovascular disease remains the leading killer in most wealthy countries, and high blood pressure is its favourite way in. It also has the worst possible marketing, because it usually feels like nothing at all. No pain, no symptom, no warning. You can spend a decade quietly wearing your arteries down and feel absolutely fine the whole time.

Korea’s projected advantage rests substantially on managing that one number well, at population scale. It costs almost nothing to find out where yours sits. Any pharmacy, any clinic, five minutes. I am a writer and not a doctor, so take the reading to someone qualified and let them tell you what it means.

Your surroundings do most of the work

Here is the part that gets under my skin. Compare Korea to the United States in the same projections. Both wealthy, both democratic, both stuffed with world-class hospitals. American women were projected at 83.3 years by 2030 and American men at 79.5, near the bottom of the 35 countries studied.

Same technology. Same money. Wildly different results. The difference sits largely in how evenly the good stuff is spread.

Scale that down to a single life and it is the most practical idea in the whole study. Your environment beats your willpower, more or less always. What is in the fridge, how walkable the neighbourhood is, whether the people around you smoke, whether a check-up is a hassle or a ten-minute errand. Fix the defaults and you stop needing to be heroic on a Tuesday night.

What to take from this if you do not live in Seoul

Three things.

First, the ceilings that experts describe as fixed tend to move anyway, and they move through accumulation rather than drama. Whatever limit you have accepted about your own health, fitness or capacity is worth poking at.

Second, the boring inputs are the real inputs. Sleep, weight, movement, not smoking, a number on a cuff. Anything more exotic is a rounding error dressed up as a strategy.

Third, and this is the one people resist, longevity is largely a systems problem rather than a discipline problem. Korea did not out-discipline anyone. It built conditions in which staying healthy was the path of least resistance for most people, then waited fifty years.

You can run that experiment on a much smaller scale, starting this afternoon. The waiting is the hard part.
