I think where I stand on the spectrum of newer music (4th, 5th gen) vs older music( 2nd & 3rd gen) debate- is that a handful of newer Albums/minis/eps are not really crafted with much intentionality for songs to be great across the board anymore.

Disclaimer: music is subjective and I have not listened to all groups under the sun. I am also not including 1st gen because I genuinely have not dived that far.

I love finding new music and I love creating endless playlists. I always try to listen to find as much new music as I can because music is just joy.

I have a lot of songs from the newer gens that I really love..quick example of my recent hyperfixations will be V for vision by Zerobaseone and Dive with me by Heart of woman.

Now here’s the thing, I feel okay …..this is what I observed, that most of these newer gen groups do not have intentionally crafted albums anymore. They just dump all the songs and call it wraps. And this is not even in the direction of do they all align with a specific concept but rather that there are hardly any buried treasures anymore. Its not just title tracks that make up discographies really (given that a lot of these are becoming too quick and easy these days)

For instance when you dive into The perfect red velvet by Red velvet after listening to Bad boy a really solid title track, you are still served with even more amazing tracks like Look, kingdom come, perfect 10 etc. Or when you dive into Seventeens Face the Sun, after listening to Hot which is a solid title track…you still have Don quixote, Ash, March, Shadow . Even Exo’s obsession album or even Shinee’s Odd Album or Even BTS’ Love yourself series.

There is just an intentionality with each album and I’m like wowww..I’m so grateful that you put out 1 album and so many songs are just that good. Like I just dived into 3 more 2nd and 3rd gen groups within the span of a year, and each layer of discography is just treasure upon treasure.

I am always happy when I find a song from a 4th or 5th gen group that I love because like I said more music more joy for me really …but I would really love more intentionally crafted albums. Like everytime you put out a 5 song mini or you know an ep (because albums are getting even rarer) why is it a struggle to really enjoy the totality of it?

Musically, in 10 years from now I will still recommend a lot of 3rd gen groups to newcomers but newer groups? P1harmony, Txt and lesserafim bsides maybe.

There are always the groups trying their best here and there but I would really love for albums/minis as a whole to strike me rather than just a song or maybe even none..

It’s all subjective anyways….but that’s where I’m at right now which is why I would still lean more towards 2nd and 3rd gen.
