When did so many groups start singing live on music shows?

I watched Music Bank in full for the first time in a long time (mainly for Billlie), and I was pleasantly surprised by how many groups were actually singing live. Of course, the backtrack volume varied depending on the group, but it still felt like a positive direction overall.

Among the boy groups, YOUNITE impressed me the most. I think their song was one of the hardest to sing out of all the boy group performances, yet their live vocals were among the loudest. BOYNEXTDOOR and CORTIS were also rapping live but with autotune layered onto their mics.

TWS also sang live, though the backtrack was on the louder side, and they’d occasionally skip some of the more demanding parts. Jihoon really stood out to me though. He just moves differently. I didn’t like the song too much when I heard it the first time, but their choreography made it more enjoyable for me.

There was also a group called FLARE U that I’d never heard of before, but they were lipsyncing. Xnghan (Seunghan) also lipsynced from start to finish.

The girl group stages were all really fun to watch. It was my first time watching H//PE Princess, and the song was actually catchy. I vibed with it. I don’t know any of their names yet, but their rap verses were loud and clear, even though the backtrack was pretty loud during the sung sections.

Illit also clearly performed live. Even with the backtrack, you could hear their voices well in the verses. It was also kind of hilarious that I couldn’t hear a single male fan during the fanchants. UNCHILD had backtrack too, but you could still hear their voices overlapping with it.

Billlie was awesome. They looked super charismatic, and you could tell just from their eyes that they had something to prove. The backtrack was kind of loud, but you could still hear their voices. I just wish they had performed WORK too.

NMIXX was just NMIXX. They performed both their prerelease and TT, and their voices were the loudest out of everyone. I especially appreciated that they didn’t skip the adlibs.

I think out of all the girl groups, aespa was the only group that lipsynced on Music Bank. It sounded like they were using a live AR version of the song. Kind of makes you wonder why, especially since WDA is already a pretty rap-heavy track.

I don’t know if it’s specifically a Music Bank thing, but if more groups are actually performing live and their mics are turned up enough for people to hear them, these music shows become way more fun to watch.
