Why is the 7-year rule a thing that happens in kpop?

I am referring to the notion that groups “stay active” for roughly 7 years before they disband due to waning interest. I just wonder why companies normalize giving these idols this sort of security blanket, if you will. Of course there are groups that go beyond 7 years, but that’s because the group continues to pop off and that’s usually pretty rare. But for smaller groups or groups that have one big hit and then tail off, companies give these groups around 7 years to stick around before moving resources to their next up and coming talent.

To be clear, I’m not saying it’s wrong and it’s great for fans who love groups that are less popular, but for Western artists signed by labels, generally they stick around far shorter than 7 years and fade off way faster. If they aren’t releasing good music consistently, they are forgetten quickly and the label essentially gives up on them.

I just find it interesting to see how in kpop, they are given more of a guarantee once they are formed, unless legal things happen, actual major scandals occur, or someone leaves the group early (although they usually carry on anyways).
