I did not go into this song thinking it would fundamentally change how i listen to Cortis. I haven’t generally liked their releases and figured that maybe I’ve just aged out liking the newest hottest groups and I went into Redred thinking I probably wasn’t going to vibe with it that I’d listen to it once and move on with my life. By the end of the first minute I was standing up and dancing and had the thought that this is the kind of song we’re still going to be talking about 10 years from now.
One of my favorite subcategories in kpop (and pop generally) are songs I would describe as “Stupid Masterpieces” like songs where the invoked emotion is something along the lines of “HELL YEAH” songs that are so goofy that they wrap back around and becomes awesome. Songs that make your brain feel pleasantly smooth and ALSO energized. I don’t speak Korean, so some of the songs I categorize this way might have really smart/clever korean lyrics and I wouldn’t know, but I take cues from the song’s instrumental, performance style, and usually very goofy English (I hope it’s clear that “goofy” here is said with immense affection).
One thing about the Stupid Masterpiece category is that they sometimes take a few listens to click for people. I’m already seeing people talking about REDRED and how they “didn’t like it at first” but that its grown on them over a few days. I think that’s gonna keep happening and also that’s often how it is with songs that stick around and get remembered. Especially now that I’ve seen the performance which has exactly the right vibe to enhance the song imo.
