The idea for this post came from a discussion I had in a different subreddit. Nonetheless, I do think it‘s an interesting topic to dive into so let me just copy / paste my earlier comment here:
The issue with Reddit being an English speaking platform is that it ignores huge fanbases outside of the Western bubble, in the case of K-Pop that would be mostly SEA but also Latine based fandoms.
Sure, some fans from these areas may occasionally pop in but they really are a minority on here compared to mostly English speaking fans. And with “English speaking fans” I mean fans whose mother language is English or fans who are fluent in English due to their country‘s educational system second language being English (as is the case with most European countries for example).
To be more precise: I‘m not trying to say that people outside of the Western sphere aren‘t capable of speaking fluent English nor am I trying to say that Western fanbases aren‘t important whatsoever. What I‘m trying to say here is that the nature of a mainly English speaking platform like Reddit creates a very lopsided opinion bubble that doesn’t necessarily reflect the group‘s popularity around the globe.
