Many compared him to Trump a few years ago. He’s said to be a conservative populist pandering to the young male population. He’s strongly linked to anti-feminism in South Korea. My Korean (girl) friend screamed in horror when I told her.
Still, as a foreigner, it’s hard to wrap my head around the issue. There’s not much information I could find about Lee Junseok online besides his want to remove the Ministry of Gender Equality, and that graphic question during the presidential debate. In the articles I read, some of his ideas concerning reforms made sense to me, yet I couldn’t find very complete information about his vision or plans for South Korea. Most English articles are very short and gloss over his existence to talk more in detail about Kim Moon-soo or Lee Jae-myung. My Korean is okay, but not to the point that I could easily read about their politics.
I would like to know more about his vision for South Korea, his political platform. Is there a reasonable explanation for a feminist to vote for him? Are women disliking him solely because men like him? It doesn’t seem like the other conservative candidate is better in regards to women rights, so why does it look like women dislike him more?
I’m not looking for black or white “he’s just the worst” or “he’s actually a great guy” answers, I’m trying to get a better, educated understanding of him. I want to know if ultimately my values align with someone who would vote for him. I will ask my boyfriend about this, but I’m also looking for more than a one-sided argument in his favor.
