You know the proccess of forming groups in kpop is sorta known to the fans, with all the reality shows, interviews, documentaries, movies, even kdramas talking about what it takes to debut and be a star.
Obviously we’ll never known the true proccess or reasons, but speculation doesn’t hurt and I believe it’s fun to think why these trainees were picked among a pool of other ones, specially when it comes to big companies who must have a really large variety to choose from and hundreds of new auditions every year.
I also chose for everyone to talk about their own favorite group cause fans are usually more familiar with the dynamics within the group and fandom which are also pretty big parts of kpop culture
My own 2 cents:
I’m an orbit so obviously I’ll talk about LOONA lol Actually there’s an ARTMS video where Jaden Jeong, the creative behind LOONA, talked about why he chose the members. But since it’s an ARTMS video he just talked about the 5 of them, the link for those who want to watch, so to not make this post overly long I’ll talk about the other 7
Hyunjin – She’s the great combination of visuals and personality. She’s funny, random and downright weird at times, she contributes a lot to the group’s overall atmosphere. Plus she’s a pretty underrated dancer, and her vocal tone has been praised plenty too (I remember it was her charm point when she went on King Of Masked Singer)
Yeojin – Yeojin has great MC and variety skills, she really knows how to play with the camera and captivate an audience, she was even chose as the host for LOONA variety content and concert before. She also always had pretty good potential with her vocals, though on a sad note it was only when she joined Loossemble that this potential actually was put to use (obligatory fuck BBC)
ViVi – Vivi is the only foreign member, which is kinda surprising given how big the group is. I believe this is part of why she was chosen: having a foreign member can help you cross more easily into a market. Aside from that she used to be a model (and really there are some great pics of her predebut), so her experience with the camera was certainly something in her favor
Yves, Go Won, Chuu and Hyeju – This is another of my atempts of shortening the post, but it’s good to talk about the last four in group too because theirs was the most peculiar proccess. Throughout the years the girls talked about how everything happened so fast, I remember Yves talking about being called to do a shoot, which she thought was just a test, but then she was informed it was for real and she’d be the next to debut
Similarly Chuu, Gowon and Hyeju all spent incredibly short times as trainees under BBC, and were almost immediately set to debut. From what I remember there were other trainees in line, but they probably weren’t enough so Jaden/BBC started to search elsewhere and that was how all four got recruited. So basically they were those rare types of trainees that just looking at them, seeing a bit of their skills and they were ready to go
And damn how lucky they got with these four. Jaden’s intuition was right after all.
