Why are people so supportive and encouraging when an idol is caught smoking?

I just want to say I’m coming from a place of understanding. The industry is stressful and demanding, so I get why some idols might use smoking as a coping mechanism. I also know it’s their personal life and I’m not concerned or care when I find out an idol smokes. I’m not against people who smoke either. I just feel like sometimes people forget that smoking does have real health effects.

What confuses me is the way some fans react. Instead of just acknowledging it and moving on, they’ll say things like “good for them” or “I guess I’ll stan now.” Some people even call it sexy or say it makes the idol more attractive and hype it up like it’s a positive personality trait. That’s the part that throws me off. Like for example, when Jungkook was shown smoking, everyone was like that’s so sexy omg…like idk it’s just strange you don’t have to comment at all — defending against hate is one thing — but no fan needs to encourage someone when they are depicted smoking out of all things.

Idols are grown adults and they know the consequences of their actions. But it’s weird seeing fans act like smoking won’t affect them at all, especially when their careers are so physically demanding. Sometimes it feels less about their actual health and more about making sure the idol doesn’t look bad or turning it into something cool.

At the end of the day it’s their choice, and it’s an addictive habit so quitting isn’t easy. I just don’t really get why some reactions are so supportive or encouraging. You don’t have to say … anything.
