When TF Did Respectful Criticism Become a Crime…?

I’ve been a fan of Wonyoung since the IZONE* days, she’s been my bias for years. Admiring someone doesn’t mean I think every single thing they do is flawless.

Recently, under a video where she did something I found a bit cringey (ig aegyo itself is a bit cringey, we can all agree with that), I said:

“I love her, but this moment was kinda cringe ngl lol 😅”

It was just a lighthearted opinion about a moment, not an attack on her as a person.

But even with a “love her” in my comment, the reaction was:

“Just scroll.” “Don’t say that here.” “You’re a hater.”

This is exactly what I find strange in K-pop spaces. If you’re a fan, sometimes it feels like you’re only “allowed” to post praise, anything else, even mild, respectful criticism, is treated like hate :/

Here’s what I’m trying to say:

  • Loving an idol doesn’t mean agreeing with 100% of what they do.
  • Noticing something awkward or silly doesn’t mean you dislike them.
  • Respectful disagreement shouldn’t be taboo in fan spaces.

If you can scroll past a comment that’s not your vibe, great, just like I could’ve scrolled past moments I didn’t enjoy.
We don’t need to turn every small critique into a war.

Maybe the problem isn’t the opinion.
Maybe it’s how allergic some people have become to even the softest disagreement.
