Stage names are a pretty common thing in kpop, most groups have at least one member that has one. But what’s the real name behind the stage name? And why did they get that stage name to begin with? I’m curious about the replies.
As for me my ult group is LOONA so I’ll list them below:
ViVi – Wong Kahei. Her stage name comes from her english name, Viian (yeah it’s not Vivian, it’s Viian)
Kim Lip – Kim Jung Eun. She shares a name with North Korea’s leader, so it’s no wonder they went with a stage name. Kim is her surname, as for Lip it’s kinda unknown why but some deduced it comes from a poem or something (tbh I forgot the proper explanation)
Jinsoul – Jeong Jinsol. Technically it’s more of a stylistic choice than a stage name, since the hangul of her real name is the same she uses as an idol, but when romanized they decided to add the “u” to her name.
Choerry – Choi Yerim. In LOONA lore her designated fruit is a cherry so Choerry is basically a play on her name + crafted to resemble the name cherry even more.
Yves – Ha Sooyoung. Another piece of LOONA lore: in the Loonaverse Yves was the girl who bit the apple and escaped Eden (yyxy’s original world). So basically her name is a reference to the christian Eve, just with a different spelling (and yes her name is pronounced Eve, also like in Yves Saint Laurent)
Chuu – Kim Jiwoo. There really isn’t much of an explanation other than it’s cute and suits her, plus Chuu says it resembles her name being spoken really fast
Gowon – Park Chaewon. Also another one nobody really knows why lol Perhaps they wanted something different, since Chaewon is such a common name. Good choice cause nowadays there are a lot of Chaewons around.
Olivia Hye – Son Hyeju. She doesn’t use the name anymore, but since it was her stage name for such a long time I decided to add. Also no clue why it was chosen. Hye is clearly from her real name while Olivia some theorize it’s because of Olivia Hussey who was very famous in SK.
