Okay, I genuinely need to talk about this because at this point I don’t understand what the plan is for Katseye.
Who exactly is their target audience? And what kind of group does HxG actually want Katseye to be?
Because the music, the image they’re pushing, and the way the girls were originally marketed feel like three completely different things.
And before anyone comes for me: I think the girls are doing an amazing job with what they are given. They’re talented, charismatic, have insane chemistry, and you can clearly see how much potential they have. My issue is almost entirely with the material they’re being given and the direction the company seems to be taking them in.
Beautiful Chaos was genuinely a good EP. Like, Gnarly well was…. Gnarly, but it worked. Gabriela was amazing. Gameboy was amazing. Mean Girls and MIA were also really good. There was actually a sense that KATSEYE were being allowed to establish an identity and show different sides of themselves.
And then we got Internet Girl. I genuinely don’t understand what they were thinking with that song.
My biggest problem isn’t even that it’s a “bad” song(which personally for me it kinda is). It’s that it came way too soon after Gnarly and felt like they were trying to recreate the exact same reaction. Gnarly already had the whole “what the fuck am I listening to?” factor. Doing essentially another deliberately ridiculous, meme-able song immediately afterwards just made it feel like they were chasing the Gnarly reaction instead of developing Katseye’s sound.
And I honestly think that hurt Pinky Up too. Because I actually LIKE Pinky Up. 😭 The chorus is admittedly weird, but that pre-chorus??? HELLO??? The song has a lot going for it. I genuinely think some of the hate toward it was amplified because people were already exhausted from Internet Girl. By that point, people had started associating Katseye with “lol look at this ridiculous song” rather than actually giving the music a chance.
Then we got Animal, which… honestly, I don’t have much to say. It’s just a pretty generic pop song to me.
And now Hooti Frutti. Ngl the music video is gorgeous. The choreography is fun. The styling is great. And honestly the MV does a REALLY good job of making the song seem better than it actually is because you’re distracted by everything happening on screen😭 But then you actually listen to the lyrics and you’re like… What the fuck are these lyrics.
And once again, the pre-chorus is SO good only for the chorus to come in and completely kill the momentum. That seems to be becoming a pattern. And this brings me to my actual problem with all of this.
What is the end goal here?
Because if HxG wants KATSEYE to be a group whose main appeal is shock value, deliberately absurd lyrics, hyper-sexualized concepts and songs designed to become memes on TikTok, then… okay. But then why were they marketed the way they were?
The survival show and the documentary spent so much time showing these girls as young artists who genuinely wanted to be in a group where they could express themselves, create music and establish themselves as artists. That’s part of why I think people are reacting so strongly to the music.
If Katseye had been introduced from day one as a group whose entire thing was unserious, brainrot pop and provocative concepts, then the discussion around their music hadn’t be so jarring. But that’s not really what we were shown. We were shown artists.
And THAT is what bothers me. Because these girls are so much more capable than that. They have the talent, the personalities, the performance ability, the international appeal, the visuals, the fandom, the attention of the general public.
They literally have everything. They don’t need to rely on shock value every single time. And honestly, that’s the most frustrating part. Because Katseye have reached a point where people are paying attention to them. You don’t have to trick people into looking at Katseye anymore.
People are already looking. So why not give them a genuinely great song with a well-developed concept? You have six(or five idk) girls who are insanely charismatic and who can sell pretty much any concept you give them. Give them something with actual substance and watch what happens.
And even looking at the new EP beyond the title tracks, Bel air and That Way sounded pretty generic to me too. Which makes the whole thing even more frustrating because there doesn’t seem to be enough musical depth behind the louder, more controversial songs either.
And I want to make this VERY clear, this isn’t me saying Katseye should suddenly become some serious, artsy, acoustic indie girl group. 😭I don’t want them to lose the fun, campy, chaotic side of their identity. That’s part of what makes them Katseye. I just don’t think “make the song increasingly ridiculous until people can’t stop talking about it” is a sustainable artistic direction.
There is a difference between being campy and being poorly written. Similarly, there is a difference between being provocative and being memorable. And Katseye are talented enough to have the latter.
I just really hope the company realizes that before they permanently associate the group with shock-value TikTok songs. Because if they actually sit down, figure out what Katseye’s identity is supposed to be, and start giving these girls consistently strong music and concepts?They could genuinely become one of the biggest girl group in the world. The potential is RIGHT THERE.
HxG, please stop fighting your own group😭
