It seemed like a stretch, but Katseye proved it might be possible, and next year there should be at least Katseye, Girlset and The Final Piece. I feel like it might work to their advantage to have three groups operate at the same time, just like stocking a shelf with different brands, it gives an impression of choice, and then you get used to the product and you end up consuming all three. It would be a great move if they manage it. (By “they” I mean whoever owns these groups and could make money off this, so maybe Hybe America and JYPE or their American label.)
To me Katseye feels like like they were LA industry aspiring child actors, children who learned singing, dancing, acting, and went on auditions. Obviously Daniela did ballroom dancing, Manon and Lara did Instagram, and Yoonchea was a Kpop trainee, but they all seemed plugged in to the show business. The only one beside Yoonchea who didn’t seem to be in LA was Manon, but she was shown hanging out at her aunt’s house in LA so it seems there was a connection there already. It seems like a big coincidence to have family there.
Girlset – I might be wrong here – seems like they were genuinely found in different cities across the US. If Katseye were already celebrities and aspiring celebrities before joining Dream Academy, it feels like Girlset were nobodies before they joined America to Korea. This makes them feel like rebels almost. I think they did great in interviews promoting Little Miss, emphasizing how they’re going their own way. They also seem interested in streaming directly on YouTube or Twitch (not sure which one), so I think that might make them accessible.
The Final Piece will be the most global group because it genuinely feels like they were all living in different countries up until they came to Dream Academy – USA, Brazil, Sweden, Japan. I wonder if they plan to cater the group more to Japan or what’s the plan, but obviously they’ll have a reality show filmed in Japanese. They all look very “cute” with fairy-like visuals so I’m hoping it’s a cute concept maybe like Adriana Grande or Sabrina Carpenter. There’s also Santos Bravos but personally I don’t understand what they were going for with the casting.
