I think mine might be a little unpopular but I would love to see what are people’s thoughts on the music itself.

Music is the single most important promo for a group. Yes, you need other forms of promo but overexposure with music that’s subpar just builds a “mid” image. Your brand might be everything but what’s important, the music.

The title track is what most people will listen to and it’s almost delusional to think the gp or even casual fanbase listens to the entire album unless you’re like Taylor swift, Sabrina carpenter, BTS, Blackpink, Bruno Mars. If the title track isn’t good, people won’t want to even think of the rest of the album. Most people listening to an album expect something fun and cohesive.

Just because a song is “weird”, “different”, or “experimental”, doesn’t mean it’s now automatically good or the epitome of creativity. Sometimes, it’s just a song like all others that was a miss.

There’s a certain insulting sentiment towards kpop and idols from kpop fans that’s hard to reconcile.what do you mean that idols aren’t artists? The music is the best part of kpop imo with a wide range of genres even from one group or solo artist. I think some people just don’t think that kpop music is music and are just fans of the vibe but that doesn’t mean that idols aren’t artists or creatives. It does everyone a disservice to parrot those talking points that racists often use towards kpop honestly.

A lot of reddit has an SM music taste and I don’t know if it’s because SM has a lot of similarities across their music that makes them united, but if you look on here and other subs, you’ll see there’s a certain “SM music is superior” rhetoric. Now, I know music is subjective etc, but it sometimes leads to a certain kind of popularity mismatch when you look at reddit opinions compared to actual music consumption. It also leads to a certain “conservative” view when it comes to the progression of music where people seem to be so against “trends” which are just natural signs of growth in the music industry. A few years ago, everyone was doing EDM and reggaeton pop, now there’s a lot of retro going on and jersey club and house are having a kind of renaissance too. People actually want to listen to new things every now and then.

When people complain about bad lyrics in kpop, they’re not asking for Shakespearean lyrics or for some deep stuff about one’s personal life. They’re asking for actually good songwriting that’s not “cringe” and that communicates. There are some people who heavily rely on a formula when it comes to lyricism and it gives off insincerity. If all the songs you release are about the same topic, with the exact same formula (usually a lot of food references, very weird sex euphemisms that are almost middle school vibes, and onomatopoeia (god I hate this bc in my mind it’s like those spoken word artists who think rhyming immediately makes them extraordinary)), the only difference is the producers and composers. Nothing changes and it gets old fast. Let’s not forget the cheesy similes and metaphors that are so prevalent. Istg some songs are literally just onomatopoeia, similes and a few chants. It’s so predictable. You can write silly lyrics in a way that communicates while still being aware of its silliness or unserious nature. Examples are some Sabrina songs (they’re so witty), Dua lipa (her songs are usually dance pop and the lyrics are just for fun), some Charli songs, some gaga songs etc. You don’t have to be Taylor Swift deep but it’s unacceptable to have 3rd grade cringe lyrics.

This is an unfortunate state of the world but while people can recognize your talent, sometimes it’s not enough if the songs aren’t “good”. By good, I mean something people want to listen to multiple times and doesn’t feel like a chore. Most people listen to the studio version of songs and if that’s good, who cares about the note belting. Sometimes people want to dance or cry or vibe to a song. All that matters is the song. Some people say that Taylor isn’t as talented as Raye but it doesn’t change the fact that at the end of the day, a good amount of people while appreciating Raye, may want to just listen to a Taylor song. Talent needs to go hand in hand with good songs, great promo etc.
