Story Preview: The Crisis That Can Save Us

Hello r/Korea – I’m an American that lived in Korea for about 5 years. I am a writer, and I’m working on a series about the lessons Americans should learn from the Martial Law Crisis and the civilian and governmental responses to it. I am trying to create a few approachable pieces that give people the broad strokes view of what happened and how that relates to the tenuous situation in American politics. I want to keep it interesting but I’m also really afraid that if I write on the absurd stuff that happened (the underwear protest, or the shamanist ex General planning a coup in a Lotteria) my work runs the risk of falling into the ‘orientalist’ trap (‘Wow! Look at those CrAzY aSiAnS protesting to Kpop music!’) that a lot of the major news coverage in the US fell into. I’m hoping to provide more nuanced and respectful work that can educate instead of turning the event into a spectacle and the people into two dimensional characters. I also tend to err very much on the side of ‘Korea as a country has problems but it’s generally a really nice place, but I want to work on balancing my work to properly acknowledge the problems faced by Korean people while remaining respectful as a guest/immigrant. Any thoughts for how I should approach this? Thanks in advance!
