SEVENTEEN as the last one standing (Appreciation post)

Don’t throw rocks at me, just sharing some ideas I’ve had for a while.

I was there when in 2016 the big three were EXO, BTS and GOT7. Of course, there were other famous group that everyone knew (IKON, MONSTA X, WINNER, SEVENTEEN…) but not in the same level of famous as those three. Now EXO was the first to start having issues with their members leaving, the lawsuits, just marrying… GOT7 was big during 2016 and remained as beloved but their fame slowly decreased until COVID-19 hit and they finally left JYPE to balance their personal ambitions and the group (they released an album in 2025 called Winter Heptagon!). Now BTS was huge when EXO and GOT7 were up and down, and when others groups came. But they went into hiatus (until this year, Happy Arirang to armys!) Now, other boygroups disbanded, slowly lost the limelight, many others debuted and the fans divided between the newly debuted, many left K-Pop… And while all this happened, SEVENTEEN remained as usual. They released albums, went on tours, did lives, and did their idol job very well. I myself became a carat and as I go back to their old content and music, I can’t help but notice they’ve always been this good but never that present in the forefront, but on the sidelines. That was until the most famous groups left the stage, and suddenly we could all see the gem we had not been seeing. I think their hard work paid off, but most importantly, their consistency. Many idols crave solo work, and many can’t balance that with their group which creates rifts in the relationship with their bandmates. But SEVENTEEN has managed to do solo work (unit work mostly, I love the DxS unit!) and group work, and remain in contract, under one company. I see them as the last third generation boy band standing because for years uninterrupted they have remained working on their group, and they’ve been very vocal about being proud of being 13. Now that negotiation are coming closer, I hope they renew and give us more beautiful music. Can’t wait for Woozi to take the lead on their new album!

  • Thinking in 3 languages
The biggest lesson I have learnt about language did not come from my Korean classroom. It came while reading an English essay written by my Korean student. Until recently, I assumed learning a language was mostly about memorizing vocabulary and grammar. After all, that is what language classes often seem to revolve around. Now, after studying English, Chinese and Korean,… Read more: Thinking in 3 languages

  • The ‘new’ 6.25 of Korean genealogy
Americans call it the Korean War. Koreans call the three-year fratricidal war that broke out on June 25, 1950, the “yug-i-o,” meaning the day the war began. Like Dec. 7, 1941 (“a day that will live in infamy” — FDR), or Sept. 11, 2001, these were days so horrific that the event is known by that day as a numeric.… Read more: The ‘new’ 6.25 of Korean genealogy
