Remember when people believed that BTS rising up would lead to end of the monopolization the big 3 had on the K-Pop Industry? Well now it’s the Big 4, what happened?

The death of big groups from small and mid-sized companies is truly sad. I always see people complaining about the constant similarities between 5th and 4th gen groups. How all K-pop does is trend hop and utilize popular trends in the global music scene. But if we were to ask these fans what k-pop artists they listen to they would only be able to provide you with groups from survival shows or ones from a Big 4 company.

Taking a look at the lineup from MAMA last year besides i-dle, IVE, and idid (survival show group) every group was from the Big 4 or from a Mnet connected survival show (MAMA stands for Mnet Asian Music Awards). This is an extremely sad situation and sort of the reason why the government is stepping in to provide sponsorship to companies from small/mid-sized companies so they’ll be able to compete in the K-Pop landscape.

When BTS rose to fame people were so happy saying the Big 3 rein was over but now their agency has evolved into HYBE and is contributing to the over saturation and monopoly in K-Pop. Instead of helping with the viability of smaller groups the situation has just made big 3 groups even bigger on a larger scale. (Obviously this isn’t putting blame on BTS but more questioning what their representation truly was in K-Pop and what is has been made out to be overtime)

This is part of the reason K-Pop is no longer evolving as a genre/industry. The people behind all the top groups are THE SAME. They have the same producers, music video directors, choreographers. These groups are even doing collaborations with one another to further occupy the market.

People used to make fun of SM Town, YG family, and JYP family, how fans of the big 3 would Stan any group that came from one of these companies meaning when they debuted they could already find success. How unfair it was to other groups but now the same thing has happened to HYBE and a large amount of fans seem to embrace it. Or they bash it but they’re doing the same thing to one of the big 3 companies.

Do we think in future mid-sized and small companies will be completely wiped out? All that will be left is the Big 4 companies and survival show groups.
