I know the album released on Monday so this might seem a little late, but I had wanted to give it a few days to really settle in and get to know the songs before I made a post. NMIXX’s music has been blowing me away for years now and, in my opinion, they really are the kind of group/artist that you should really get to know the music before throwing out reviews based on one listen!
Blue Valentine (9/10) Soooo good! I can’t stop listening to it. NMIXX, in my opinion, has always been so good at selecting title tracks and I think this is no exception. I find myself singing “bluu-uu-uu-uue valentine” constantly, it’s such a cute and lovey song. I’m so glad to see it trending in South Korea and charting on Melon!
Spinnin’ On It (10/10) Still as incredible as when the music video dropped! Might be my fav on the album! I still can’t believe that they didn’t release it digitally with the pre-release mv. One word that I keep coming back to describing NMIXX’s music is hypnotic. I feel like I’m spinning round and round, no pun intended, while listening to it.
Phoenix (8.5/10) This song feels like Papillion’s sister! Papillion has some of the best instrumentals in Kpop ever. Can’t help but also place Phoenix up there! The beat and the vocals are just everything. It’s hypnotizing (there’s the word again!) and so catchy!
Reality Hurts (8.75/10) THIS SONG!!! The chorus is so good, like seriously just sucks you in. I’m really loving the way they use electronic sounds in their music without it feeling painful to my ears/brain and this is definitely a standout! It gives them a futuristic edge that works with their concept that seems to edging on eco-futurism.
RICO (6.75/10) This song sounds like an Itzy song lol. It’s great, don’t get me wrong like I love itzy, but once I realized why it sounded familiar I can’t unhear it. It’s probably my least favorite on the album because I think it fits the album the least and sounds the least like NMIXX. Still great though!
Game Face (8/10) A classic NMIXX bside! The vocals, groovy instrumentals, just perfect! It sounds like something off the expergo album which I think is marked by its phenomenal bsides!
Podium (8.5/10) This is such a great hype song! The spanish is so cool! I really love how much NMIXX incorporates other languages, besides English, Korean, and Japanese, in their music. It definitely elevates it!
Crush On You (7/10) Such a cute song and definitely fits the album really well! It has almost tropical instrumentals?? It’s kind of the least exciting song, so I see why some people, especially NSWERs rate it low, but it’s super cute and fun!
Adore U (9/10) Oh how I LOVE songs with heavy guitar and percussion!! It sounds like a band song!! This is definitely top three on the album for me!! The chorus just fills my chest with the music, if that makes sense. Band-like songs are some of my favorites in Kpop.
Shape of Love (8.75/10) A great album closer (barring the o.o versions), it’s another great song with gorgeous composition. The vocals, as always, are beautiful and it’s such a great listening experience. This album is so cohesive and this really ties it into a nice bow!
O.O Balia and O.O Superhero – Okay, so listening to these I was just waiting fir the other version to come in. Like damn, squad was into something by combining them! Balia is pretty quintessential girl crush, a sound that I think Kpop has been sorely missing so it makes sense that people are gravitating towards it over Superhero. Superhero is still super energetic and has heavy guitars featured, which I love!
TLDR; Amazing album definitely worth a listen! Especially if the last time you heard an NMIXX song was O.O and Tank. Their sound has evolved so much ans they’ve really perfected their music. Genuinely, it is some of the best in Kpop. Their Fe304 triology cemented their direction and that they knew what they were doing. Even as a non-fan, you’ll probably find at least one song you like.
