Newjeans didn’t ruin kpop, you just really like loud music

i’ve seen A LOT of people saying newjeans ruined kpop.

“it was fun until newjeans became successful and suddenly all the groups started releasing calm and boring songs”

i don’t even classify kpop as genre because musicwise it’s way too wide to call it a genre. kpop is house, it’s pop, it’s hip hop, rap, r&b, rock, and so much more. it’s also ballads.

ballads are a huge thing in korea, much more than in the west. slow and emotional songs actually trend here, same as lo-fi and calm r&b sounds.

if you’ve been to korea, generally get the vibe, you’d know the “boring” songs are much more korean-ish than for example what stray kids does.

i feel like some of the complaining is demanding to make kpop music more approachable for the western fans and i don’t like that idea. they’re koreans. it’s still korean industry, first and foremost.

the 2nd thing is that, some people like chiller sounds you know? i actually love to study, sleep, take a walk with music that’s not loud – but rather just there with me, in the background, adding to the experience.

softer music not being your cup of tea doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be made.

some mainstream examples of that style:

– all newjeans songs

– le sserafim’s “sour grapes”, “perfect night”

– ive’s “off the record”

– katseye’s “touch” or “gameboy”

i really don’t understand what about this type of music “ruins kpop”
