GROUP* goddamn the one misspelling i have in the whole post and it’s in the uneditable title
Dubstep has kind of been getting a slight revival at least in the alt-pop scene at the moment, with artists like 2hollis getting attention for emulating some of the early 2010s brostep textures artists like Skrillex were known for.
On that note…
I know that dubstep is honestly scene as a half joke genre by a lot of people who don’t know any better, but… do you know how awesome it’d be to have a group where their whole concept is just Skrillex but make it K-pop?
There have been some dubstep or dubstep-adjacent tracks before. Hate by 4Minute was co-produced BY Skrillex. Catch Me If You Can by SNSD wasn’t quite dubstep but a couple of the instrument choices were definitely inspired – similar for Red Light by f(x).
But man, I’m getting bored. K-pop companies’ ideas of “experimental music” is now entirely just “shove two concepts together and make it work.” I love some of those tracks, to be clear. NMIXX and aespa are some of my top played artists. But… it stops being experimental when it slowly becomes a formula. I just want a group to come out and do something entirely left-field, unexpected, out of nowhere. Like, imagine ILLIT just randomly decides one day that their promoted B-side is a full brostep revival but make it kinda cutesy. I would go FERAL.
Anyone else got random genres they wanna see emulated by k-pop groups, or anyone else just kinda bored by the brand of “experimentation” we’ve got at the moment?
sidebar on what I mean by being bored: back when groups like f(x or ACE were known for their unique sounds, it was because they’d genuinely come out with sounds no one else was doing at the time. nothing else quite sounded like red light or nu abo when they came out, or ace’s cactus. they weren’t considered experimental just because they were taking two existing sounds and mashing them together, or just writing songs with really quirky structure. that’s what groups seem to like doing at the moment, and while it’s fun and has produced some awesome songs – it’s not as fresh as it was when Next Level/Savage or O.O first came out. it’s turned into a formula, where the songs can be considered “out there” without actually doing THAT much different in terms of individual sections. a song like itzy’s 8 bit heart goes a bit harder and is a bit more unique, but still i somehow feel it could commit to the bit more and go crazier. i just want companies with big budgets to take huge risks in terms of title tracks. give me gimmicky nonsense, that’s the most fun part of kpop! fuck, give me a marching band comeback – it’s been far too long since After School’s BANG.)
