I have seen a few people talk about how this year they found mama pretty bad. Some people think that the performances weren’t the best and that the show overall was alcking, and while understandable we literally have to the current circumstances into consideration. Due to the horrible and tragic tragedy in Hong Kong, mnet stated a date prior that mama would be tamed down to pay respect. Many idols basically had to do last minute changes to their wardrobe and tame down their performances which is honestly the least they could do. Also I wouldn’t be surprised if the staff told the idols to try and be as tame as they can specially when they win something. Also a little side not, I found it weird how when everything went down kpop stans showed more concern about mama potentially being cancelled and were arguing about it, like how insensitive can you be people literally were dying an award show should had been the least of your concern. Considering the circumstances and last minute changed, overall I actually really liked this day 1.
Now before I continue I of course want to state that this are just my opinions and its ok if you don’t agree.
Wish to Hearts: I really liked this performance, it was pretty fun. Both Focus and color went pretty cool together and really fit the concept of the performance. It has been a while since there has been a collab stage between a male and female group like this(atleast in mama) so it was even more exciting. Both Nct wish and Hearts2hearts served good energy and looked like they were having a good time. Color is definitely going to be added in my playlist after I write this.
Flip the coin: I don’t really listen to tws, besides plot twist I have never listened to one of their songs fully. Of course I know that they have a pretty bright sound and concept so I was pretty surprised when I saw the concept they were going with at the start. While overdrive didn’t fit the concept both them and meovv where going with in this “collab”, I really liked their performance overall. Meovv absolutely KILLED IT, they went literally insane during their dance break and their stage presence was amazing. Even tho they did good in 2024, this was an extremely noticeable improvement from last year, definitely one of the highlights of the night.
First Act: Formula: I watched boys 2 planet fully so I am familiar with each of the members, and while I decided not to stan them I was pretty curious about their performance. Their stage presence was really good aswell as their dancing but their song wasn’t exactly good in my opinion. It was also pretty obvious in some parts that they weren’t actually singing, the only one who sang live from what I saw was sanghyeon which I find it ironic since he was the member who got the most hate for his vocals during the show. Hopefully their title track is a bit better.
Monster’s Night Live: When I saw baby music was in the lineup I knew damn well they were going to put up an amazing performance which they did. Their stage presence were amazing and Ahyeon’s high not was crazy, im happy they finally are attending award shows.
Mnet Movie Awards: I thought this was an amazing and unique concept, of course you can always count on bnd to put an fun and energetic performance. Plus I really liked the throwback to last year’s performance.
Moves in the depth: Once again Yeonjun put on a crazy performance, his stage presence was good and his dancing was on point. A little side note, ggum definitely deserved to be nominated for best dance performance male solo.
Look at me now: Idle was one of the only groups who sang live which I gladly appreciated. Tho the members didn’t really seemed to be enjoying the performance, I don’t hold it against them at all since its 100% understandable why they didn’t really seem to excited. They put on a pretty good show and despite feeling down they put on a great performance.
RevIve Me: For me Ive’s performance was my favorite overall. I absolutely loved their outfits and the concept of the performance. The members had great energy throughout the performance and I love how you could clearly tell that they were having so much fun specially, wonyoung and yujin. Of course I am a bit biased since I love rebel heart but overall I loved it. Its amazing seeing the improvement from their 2022 stage till now.
Crimson Broken: Putting my bias aside, I think this performance might had bene the highlight of the night. Their performance was amazing, and while I do wish they had sang a bit more I greatly enjoyed it specially no doubt.
My biggest pet peeve with last year’s mama and award shows in general was how they basically gave out an award to everyone who was in attendance. Don’t get me wring I do not find it wrong that groups who worked hard are being awarded, but I just feel like it defeats the purpose of an award show if you get what I mean. This year tho or atleast for day 1 they actually didn’t give out any awards to all the groups who were in attendance which I was honestly quiet surprised. While they did give out some “made up” awards to some groups, I would say does were pretty justifiable, I mean in my opinion bnd deserved best male group since they absolutely killed it on kcharts so favorite male group was deserved. Please don’t get me wrong, I am not saying the groups who didn’t get anything didn’t deserve to be awarded because they absolutely did, and who knows they might be given something today. I am glad hearts2hearts ended up being one of the winners for best new artist they were my main pick for that.
While I did enjoy it, I did have somethings I didn’t quiet enjoy. The sound was pretty bad and it was also pretty clear some idols were not actually singing live. Overall tho I thought it was a pretty good show and I did have a good time. What were your personal opinions on day 1?
