I am a US born Korean American and my parents were born in the 50s. My mom has been watching a lot of Korean YouTube and I feel confused and misunderstood because we don’t agree politically. I desperately want to understand her and find common ground but I think she’s far right and her beliefs sound MAGA. Just as much as I think she’s wrong, she can’t understand my views and it’s heartbreaking and I am very confused. For context, my parents are devout Christians after converting from Buddhism in the 70s. She thinks the new president is ruining the country and allowing Chinese into S. Korea and letting them buy a lot of the land in Jeju island. She mentioned that the new president ticked off Trump and so that’s why he retaliated against the Korean workers at the Hyundai plant in Georgia. She alsoade excuses for the ousted Korean president saying he only declared martial law because the Democrats wouldn’t give him money and that the soldiers didn’t even have loaded weapons. (I t9kd her it’s because the soldiers didn’t agree to martial law orders and didn’t want to hurt civilians but she didn’t seem persuaded) She also rationalized the ousted president’s wife for taking the luxury purse from the pastor in the sting operation saying every administration takes bribes. She’s distrustful of mainstream Korean media and gets all her content from YouTube. And yes, my parents voted for Trump. I don’t understand how we’re so far apart. She’s deeply troubled that Korea is losing the US’s support because of the liberal president and we’re headed for WWIII. I am just flabbergasted. Can anyone shed light on whether this is just the thinking of a small minority of Koreans? Please be gentle in your comments, as I’m genuinely worried and feeling vulnerable.
