I saw a tweet that said, “As a woman, you need to have at least one girl group that you love. Only stanning boy groups is crazy, I’m sorry.” And honestly? What kinda performative feminism is this? Since when did my playlist become a gender issue?
I listen to tons of female artists, but I don’t stan any female Kpop groups. It’s not that I have some weird bias against girl groups—I just haven’t found one whose music matches my taste. If I do, it won’t be because of their gender, it’ll be because I like their sound. That’s how music works. But the way people police female fans of boy groups is actually insane. The second a woman primarily listens to boy groups, suddenly she’s a pick-me or a failed feminist. Like… do y’all hear yourselves? People generally don’t pick music based on the artists’ gender, they pick it because they LIKE the music.
Yes, girl groups deserve real, consistent support instead of being treated as inferior. And yeah, some delulu female stans will blindly defend their male idols even when they shouldn’t. Those are valid discussions. But how did we go from that to guilt-tripping women just for liking boy groups? Since when did listening to music become a moral test? Feminism is about choices, not about forcing a quota onto people’s playlists.
If we actually care about sexism in K-pop, let’s focus on real issues—like how girl groups face stricter rules, harsher public scrutiny, and fewer long-term career opportunities. How female idols get dragged for existing while (some) male idols get unlimited passes despite their scandals. That’s the conversation. But instead, some people act like the biggest crisis in the industry is a woman liking male artists too much. Girl group stans are amazing, but that doesn’t mean boy group stans deserve this weird moral policing.
It’s just music. Not everything has to be a deep sociopolitical debate. Maybe let people enjoy their damn playlists in peace.
