I live in Europe but visited my Korean mom in the US over the summer. When I came home I brought back a suitcase stuffed with gim packets (the toasted salted oiled kind) because they are hard to find where I live and otherwise expensive. These contain 5 packs of seaweed in that foil plastic packaging which are then packaged in a bundle in sealed plastic.
Since I live in a small-ish apartment, I’ve been storing the suitcase of seaweed on my balcony and fetching a pack whenever needed. I figured the packaging and the suitcase would protect it from the elements for the most part, and so far the seaweed has been fine there. Well, over the past 2-3 weeks it’s started becoming fall weather, more damp and rainy. Well, yesterday I fetched a pack and after opening and trying it, realized it has lost its crunchiness and had obviously absorbed some moisture.
Ugh, I feel so stupid for not heeding the instructions on the packs about keeping in a dry place. Big damn mistake and I’ve learned my lesson. I truly thought that the multiple sealed plastic packaging and the hard shell suitcase would protect from the elements, but clearly, I was very wrong. I brought all the seaweed inside now, but not sure if there’s even a point since they clearly all aborbed some moisture, presumably permanently.
Anyway, is my seaweed completely ruined now? It seems edible, just not as crunchy and good. But I’m worried about them, for example, spoiling or molding or something, now that they have absorbed some moisture and are in the sealed packs. Anyone have experience with this situation before?
