LE SSERAFIM has an awkward identity issue

To preface, Le Sserafim is my second favorite group ever and they’re the group that got me interested in kpop in the first place.

I love Le Sserafim’s messaging and it’s always been one of their greatest strengths. Songs like “Good Parts”, “Fearless”, “Impurities”, “Crazy”, etc. are all about being unapologetically you despite your quirks and insecurities. Yunjin especially has been vocal about this and you can see her saying things like “wanting to change the idol industry”, signalling support for the LGBT community, and so on.

And then, you have a handful of songs that have kind of the opposite messaging or have a part that makes me think “huh?”. You have songs like Spaghetti and 1-800 that are these kind of “fuck you we’re hot” songs, and especially in their recent b-side Saki you have Yunjin of all people saying “you fucking wish” about someone asking for their number.

Boompala leaning into a caricature of spirituality (and relying on a very famous sample) and Smart being heavily inspired by Tyla also fo against the “be you” theme for me.

I don’t think it’s a MAJOR issue by any means but it’s kind of annoying to see when you have years of songs about self love and then the group turns around and leans heavily into their value through the beauty standard and other people’s lack of value through it.

In some capacity I do still think these songs are about self love, but I think the way they’re phrased leave me a little baffled about the intention.
