ok so I’ve been thinking about how weird Korean dating culture must look from the outside and I need to talk about it
소개팅 (sogaeting) — the default way Koreans meet people. Not at a bar, not on an app. A mutual friend sets you up with someone they think you’d like. You meet for coffee, you have one conversation, and you decide if you want to see them again. It sounds formal but honestly almost every Korean has done this multiple times 😄
로테이션 소개팅 — the upgraded version. Think speed dating but Korean. An even number of guys and girls, you rotate every 10-20 minutes, and at the end you pick who you want to see again. This has blown up with the MZ generation recently.
The bookstore thing — this one’s newer and kind of poetic. People have started going to bookstores specifically to meet someone. You browse, you make eye contact, someone works up the courage to ask for a number. Bookstores in certain areas of Seoul have basically become the new dating spot. A place built for quiet and solitude is now where people go to find connection 😂
How does dating work where you’re from? Curious how different it is 👇
