Jennie’s special appearance for the “One of the Girls” with The Weeknd made one thing clear.

No matter how Jennie is as a performer, the power she holds in South Korea is diabolical. Even after more than 10 years, plus Blackpink being on indefinite hiatus as a group; the craze for Jennie in her home country is pretty formidable.

For context, The Weeknd performed 2 nights at Goyang for his After Hours Til Dawn Tour Asia Leg on 7th and 8th. Since these were the SK dates, many people online were already speculating for Jennie to appear for the song One of the Girls that she did with Weeknd. Also since she skipped the Paris FW for Chanel which was on 5th, the buzz blew up even more. Even like official online news outlets on all the social platforms started posting about the speculations.

And of course, she didn’t appear on the first date. After the first night, the korean social media was full of articles and posts about her not being there, etc etc. Consequently she appeared on the 2nd night for the song, and the crowd went superhype.

I mean I always kinda knew how big she is in South Korea. Since, I have seen people started naming their kids after her name, Jennie; back when she was a rookie even. But, I thought the age group that fell in love with her might grow older like in their late 20s / 30s even, by now. Today it changed my perspective. More than half of the people who posted on socials about it, are the kids in the early 20s and college goers mostly. I am not saying they are avid fans of her, coz it was at the end of the day a Weeknd show. So, mostly would be his fans.

But still, seeing the live clips made me realize that Jennie is like a representative of the country people who take pride in her accomplishments. The definition of the so-called “IT girl” is in fact being adored by the country in everything. And among all of said girls, Jennie might be the only one who transcend as time goes by. Even if the group buzz fade away in the next decade or so, her name would still be taken in pride in that country for sure.

Like us being outside of South Korea, it doesn’t seem like too big of a deal. But the way my friends from South Korea and the ones who are studying there talks about Jennie, you might think she is their kid or something lol. Idk about the legacy around the world, but she has already reached that level in her country.
