It’s normal (and okay!) to not remember concerts well

with all the discussions around filming and phone presence at concerts, here’s my two cents:

I’m someone who started going to concerts before smartphones were a thing. And for pretty much all of them, I only have a few real memories of specific moments: an interaction when the artist smiled at me (when I was lucky enough to be close), an image of Florence Welch dancing barefoot in her white dress, how the lights went down when my favourite song started playing.

But what I remember vividly is the emotions I felt, for each of them. the excitement, the joy, the tears sometimes. looking at a stranger during a song and connecting without words. the sore muscles after dancing too much, sore throat after singing too much. laughing a lot. the bruises after the posh pit. the joy when the callback was a niche beloved song that I didn’t think they’d play.

all this to say, I never felt a sense of loss for not having actual videos of the concert, because the beauty was in the lived moment, in not caring about anything but feeling the music and showing the artist how fucking elated I was to be here.

I get that times have changed, and I don’t want to be a “it was better in my time” type of oldie, but I wish people would get to experience music like that, in the moment and fully. because we will always forget details, that’s how the brain works, but we don’t forget the emotions.

take a picture, take a selfie, take a short video of your favourite song. but give yourself the chance to put the phone down, close your eyes and just feel it.
