Is having members who write the songs key to a boy group’s success?

If we look at the very top boy groups from each generation, they all have something in common.

1st Gen: Seo Taiji & The Boys is the no.1 boy group.

2nd Gen: BIGBANG is no. 1.

3rd Gen: BTS is no. 1, and Seventeen is no. 2.

4th Gen: Stray Kids is no. 1.

What do these groups have in common? They all have members who participate in writing and/or producing most or all of the group’s music. There are, of course, many boy groups from each generation who achieve great success despite not regularly helping write the music. But the most successful bgs from each generation are ones who do.

If we look at boy groups that were able to grow from a debut at a relatively small company to major success, they are largely groups who participate in writing their material. BTS and Seventeen are obvious examples, and Ateez is the most recent group to achieve such a feat.

5th generation is still getting started, but Boynextdoor started out with modest sales and has now sold over 1 million copies of their latest release, growing sales every comeback. They’re also the only major 5th gen bg so far with members who regularly appear in the writing credits.

Is this pattern merely a coincidence, or is there something to be said for songwriting as a key to the upper echelons of success for boy groups?

Side note: it’s interesting to note that this pattern doesn’t really hold for girl groups.
