As someone who personally knows a few dancers, has grown up on trashy, problematic shows which would often speak on the bodies of others, the word healthy is kind of…. two faced to me. Most people when you say, “You look healthy,” view it as a phrase of endearment, maybe even motivation? While it definitely can still be motivation for dancers and models alike, the motivation is to get well, thinner. You see often times calling someone healthy in an industry known for serious self esteem issues and disorders, healthy often means too big, fat if you will. Now while times have definitely gotten better, that attitude is still carried in a lot of cases.
Now let’s begin on the actual topic of today’s post: Are Kpop fans using the term healthy as praise, or in a condescending manner?
This topic has definitely been brought up before, but I’m always curious about different opinions and perspectives in such convo’s. Korea is kind of known amongst kpop fans as a country that holds quite toxic beauty standards.
Just to name a few,
• Double eyelids
• Tall nose bridge
• Small face
• Pale skin
• Aegyo-sal
• Slim Body
These standards are particularly harsh on celebrities, specifically idols and actors. You fit too little, your ugly, not fit to be an idol. You get the adjustments to fit into said standards, your too plastic, a bad role model. This applies especially to a Slim body. Omg you can’t fit an XXXXS (this is of course an exaggeration), OBESE. The tiniest bit of bellyfat shows when your wearing extremely tight clothes and are sitting down? Be ready to get clipped.
Ever since coming out of hiatus, it’s rare you go through an Jeongyeon video comment section and not see at least 20 comments saying she looks so healthy with a ❤️ emoji. Jeongyeon styled in an amazing outfit, comment: “She looks so healthy” Jeongyeon and the rest of twice performing, comment: ” Jeongyeon looks healthier than before”. Why is “he/she looks healthy” only commented to praise an idol who has a slightly larger body type compared to most idols? Jihyo is known to actively be in the gym often and she doesn’t receive nearly as many of these types of comments. It feels almost exaggerated. The same has happened to so many idols and it’s not until they lose weight that people actually start to praise their beauty outside of the weight. Idk, honestly might delete this later, kind of just wanted to rant.
