I’ve lived in Korea for a while and have some close Korean friends but I wasn’t sure if this was a sensitive topic for some Koreans or just an awkward thing to bring up randomly lol. I know this forum is nearly all foreigners but have any talked about redevelopment with their native Korean friends and what is the general consensus?
It seems that more than the foreigners who write think pieces on the gentrification of Korea, Seoul locals are generally pretty neutral on redevelopment. Redevelopment obviously has an ugly history in Korea considering the previous actions of the government, but it seems that most Seoul locals understand that on some level redevelopment is necessary since the older buildings that are being redeveloped are basically unlivable.
If anyone has nuanced opinions based on how native Koreans actually think or links to articles I’d be grateful to learn more about this topic. I did some light research on Google but it didn’t yield much from Korean perspectives. I know that the local public is 60% against redevelopment in Yongsan Park in recent articles about the Seoul mayor/the government, but that seemed to be more about redeveloping in a park rather than about Seoul locals views on redevelopment as a whole.
