I’ve had songpyeon before, but I guess my question is related to my more recent experiences not matching what I thought they’re supposed to be.
The first time I had songpyeon was when some Korean friends brought some from H-Mart. The rice part had a similar texture to garaetteok, and the sesame on the inside was both sweet and still had a grainy texture.
The only other songpyeon I’ve had was, in recent years I bought some frozen ones that were imported from Korea. I’ve bought it twice, and I believe it’s been from two different brands. They were quite different from the H-Mart ones. The rice part was softer and less chewy, the sesame on the inside had a pastey texture, and it was barely sweet at all and actually verging on being salty.
Ironically, this year I also bought some “honey flavored” tteok, which I assumed was going to be ggultteok, and aside from the shape being different, they were actually exactly what I expected the songpyeon would taste like.
Is this a case where the pre-packaged ones just aren’t as good as fresh? I’m hoping the answer is yes because I have been kind of disappointed by the frozen ones, but I’m also at the point where I can’t fully enjoy the ones from H-Mart either (because I can tell that they’d be a million times better from an actual tteok shop).
