Had a surreal experience at Seoul Land

My wife was tied up with work yesterday, so I took my daughter to Seoul Land in Gwacheon by myself. We stayed from the early afternoon until the 7 PM finale, a grand show with fireworks and a dance segment. When the music kicked in, my daughter and I started dancing, thinking it was the natural thing to do. And we were the only ones. What was truly jarring wasn’t just that nobody else joined in, but that they all just stood there with blank expressions, staring at us like we were some kind of side show.

I’ve always heard that Koreans are excessively self-conscious and care way too much about the gaze of others, but I didn’t expect it to be this extreme. It felt as if their emotions had been surgically removed. It was a party atmosphere, yet the crowd seemed completely stifled by the fear of standing out or being judged by strangers.

Honestly, it was a bit depressing to see a whole crowd so paralyzed by outside opinions that they couldn’t even enjoy a fireworks show with their kids. It was such a bizarre, clinical vibe for a theme park. The social pressure here is no joke.

I actually filmed the moment because I wanted to show how upbeat the music was and the stark contrast with the crowd’s vibe.
