A few days ago, they were on Seungkwan’s talk show to talk about like, literally everything and shittalk Pledis in between. Seungkwan then pointed out, “It’s been a long time since your debut. You still don’t feel old, though.”
Chaeyoung then replied, “Because we haven’t released many albums” which resulted in a brief awkward silence lol. It’s the honest truth though. 2022 was the year I want to say they came closes to being “overexposed”, they were active on Tiktok, they had two successful comebacks and they were HYBE’s golden girls for a few months.
I think her explanation summed it up: “Seeing someone four times a year VS seeing someone once a year. It’s so refreshing! And sometimes, we appear once every two years. A bit of mystery, perhaps?”
This strategy ordinarily would not work for most groups, as we can see what happens when you shove most groups into a hiatus/other non-comeback activites after a big comeback/year. (Viviz, Weeekly, etc.) But for fromis_9, the 2019 hiatus and 2023 hiatus reset their image. Many Koreans actually thought Supersonic was their debut song because they’ve never heard of them prior to that point lol.
I don’t think it’s just about music quality. It’s really about how the public sees you and how your branding is viewed.
