Found my #1 아귀찜 (spicy monkfish stew) spot near Gangnam-gu Office station — heat is adjustable and it's the perfect soju pairing

Went to a place called 대가아구찜해물탕 near Gangnam-gu Office station, and even though their own sign modestly says “2nd best in town,” this is my personal #1 아귀찜 spot now.

For anyone unfamiliar, 아귀찜 is a spicy braised monkfish dish with bean sprouts and minari (Korean watercress), tossed in a thick chili-garlic sauce. Monkfish itself is lean, high-protein, and loaded with collagen and omega-3s, so it feels indulgent but not heavy.

What stood out here: the spice level felt more savory/umami than straight-up fiery, and from what I understand these places can usually adjust the heat level if you ask — great if you’re not into extreme spice but still want that deep flavor.

We also added 육전 (thin pan-fried beef slices, lightly battered) on the side, and the combo with the monkfish sauce was unreal. Plus they threw in complimentary kimchi soup and kimchijeon (kimchi pancake) — genuinely generous portions.

Honestly, this dish is basically built for soju. The savory heat plus the beef and rich sauce make it one of the best anju (drinking food) I’ve had in a while. If you’re ever near Gangnam-gu Office station and want a proper Korean spicy stew + soju night, this is the move.
