Melon is a streaming service owned by KAKAO. Hence, many awards might feel unfair. But to make the background clear.
KAKAO owns STARSHIP and a hefty part of SM (tbh a big chunk). So, you would see all of the artists of both companies. Getting their awards. Longer performance time for specific artists, special efforts on stage for those artists.
All in all, ya’ll should get the picture now.
Anyways now on my remark.
- Happy for JENNIE. Might be the best performance of the night. Felt like I was watching her perform for a big global music festival. The production, performance, energy, everything felt perfect.
- ZICO, GD, BND, did their magic on the stage as well.
- No hate to GD, been a fan of him and his group. But, at least SONG OF THE YEAR was robbed.
- SONG OF THE YEAR – where’s APT, where’s GOLDEN ??????????
Now I did some research. (correct me if I am wrong in any way)
How SOTY (Daesang) is DECIDED in MMA?
MMA doesn’t base the award solely on streaming numbers, their formula —
- Melon Digital Data (Streams + Downloads) = 60%
- Online Fan Voting = 20%
- Judges Panel = 20%
The tracking period for MMA 2025 was OCT 31st 2024 to NOV 19th 2025.
And there was a disclaimer – Songs released in this period only are eligible.
So, this cleared my one doubt, APT got released on OCT 18th 2024. Consequently, the song was not nominated.
But GOLDEN was nominated ! And it had record streak on all streaming platforms. First song ever to hit 100 days at #1 on the MELON daily chart; achieved a record number of hourly perfect all-kills.
After all this, one thing was clear as the sky on a summer day.
Korean Award shows are slowly losing it’s whole meaning. Back then, these awards were used to mean something. A prize for all the hardwork that our fav artists put through the whole year. An assurance that their work is being acknowledged and for fans, a token of pride that their fav artists have won something big.

Can’t blame the artists as well, they do their work. Every artist has their own hardships and step ups.
Hence, ultimately it’s in our best interest as fans to just support our fav artists and enjoy as they embark on their adventures. Watch them do their best work and take pride in achievements that mean something.
