Hey all! I’ve just watched yet another video about k-pop and my heart sank a bit further. I can’t stop perceiving it as a predatory and abusive machine praying on young people and destroying their self-esteem under a guise of art, where in reality their only goal is to maximise profits by all means. Sort of like Labubus instill unhealthy gambling habits under a disguise of cute monsters. I see both as fake and evil industries that try to convince people they are ‘happy and wholesome’, unfortunately often succeeding.
I was never a fan myself, but some of my friends listen to k-pop and have their favourite acts. I’m just struggling to reconcile my outlook with them just enjoying their hobbies. Usually, I don’t bring those things up, as I hate to be the person ringing the alarm bell every time k-pop is mentioned – I see how it could be annoying to them. But also I feel like it’s morally wrong to support such an industry, so it hurts to see some of my friends fall into it’s trap.
So I wanted to ask you, other fans – I’m curious to see your outlook on this, how do you feel about the shady business practices and could you highlight some of the positives of k-pop for me? Just for me to try and see it in brighter colours and relate to those friends more.
I’m not here to argue or start wars with anyone btw, I’m a sensitive person guided by empathy and honestly each time I’m hearing news about k-pop industry, rampant capitalism, political divides, wars, etc., it just makes me a bit sad about the state of the world 🙁
