When I was a teenager (I’m now 24) I used to spend so much time learning and practicing kpop dances, but in recent years I have found that my enthusiasm for learning new dances has really waned.
Obviously a big part of it is growing up and having less spare time as an adult. But I think a big part of it is that throughout the 4th and 5th generation (4th gen boom kind of coinciding with when I stopped learning dances) difficult & complex dances have become a mainstay of kpop. As a result I find myself getting frustrated at how I can’t learn dances because they are too difficult for me ( I don’t really have any formal dance training, I just taught myself and did it for fun). I feel like I have a decent enough ability to learn a lot of 2nd and 3rd gen kpop dances, but most 4th and 5th dances are just too hard for me to do well.
As a teen I wasn’t sporty and this was really my main form of exercise from the ages of 13-20, so I would really love to get back into it, since the gym intimidates me a bit and I do want to get moving again doing something I enjoy. So does anyone have any fairly recent (past 5 years or so) kpop dances they could recommend for me to learn that might match up better with my skill level? I prefer girl group dances (as you can see below) but I’m definitely open to boy groups too!
Some example of dances I know, to demonstrate what kind of level I mean: • Dumb Dumb – Red Velvet • Ice Cream Cake – Red Velvet • Anything by Girls’ Generation • Anything by AOA • Dalla Dalla – Itzy • All pre-2020 Twice tracks • Lady – EXID • Growl – EXO
Some “recent” (post-2021) dances I have been able to learn: • Mr Vampire – Itzy • Nemo Nemo – Yena (with some struggle…) • Alcohol Free – Twice • Wadada – Kep1er • Tomboy – (g)i-dle • Queencard – (g)i-dle
