not really a new take, just something i’ve been noticing more again recently
do you think branding and concept have become just as important as the music itself in kpop, or does music still end up being the main factor that defines a group in the long run?
kpop has always been visual and concept-driven, so branding was never really separate from the music. but lately it feels like, in some cases, the conversation around a group starts more with the aesthetic, styling, concept photos, or overall “image” rather than the actual song.
it makes me wonder if that shifts how people connect with the music itself over time. like, do strong visuals and marketing actually help songs have more longevity and replay value, or does the music still need to be strong on its own regardless of how well it’s packaged?
because while branding can definitely pull people in, i also wonder if it sometimes overshadows whether the music actually holds up outside of the era it was released in.
personally, i think both matter, but in different stages—branding might get attention first, but music is what decides longevity.
what do you think matters more in today’s kpop landscape—music quality or branding/concept? and when you get into a group, what usually makes you stay: the sound or the image?
What group do y’all think leans on aesthetic more than the music itself ?
