Countries are more than regimes

I follow a Russian vlogger who visited North Korea last year and on one of her North Korea reels someone commented “I will never understand visiting totalitarian regimes for non-journalistic purposes. It is morally bankrupt”. There’s no shortage of questionable takes online, but reducing entire countries to just their governments is incredibly closed-minded. A country is its history, culture, architecture, cuisine, and people—politics is just one piece of the puzzle. It’s like when people say they won’t visit China, Vietnam, Russia, Cuba, Saudi Arabia, or the United States because they don’t want to support the regime. Oh hon, trust me, that $12K you spent in the USA is not going to make a difference for a country that has a $6.9 trillion annual budget. Instead of seeing the world through a purely political lens, lead with curiosity and form your own opinions.
