Chamisul vs Chum-Churum: does anyone actually taste the difference?

I’ve been drinking green-bottle soju my whole adult life and I still can’t tell them apart after the first bottle. Ask a Korean which one they prefer and they’ll have an answer immediately — but I think the split isn’t because the two taste different. It’s because they taste so similar that everyone just picks a side and commits.

The usual line is that Chamisul is a bit smoother and sweeter, Chum-Churum a bit cleaner. Fine. But by the time you’re ordering the second bottle, telling them apart is about as easy as telling apart oxygen and carbon dioxide.

Honest opinion: diluted soju doesn’t actually taste good. What you’re chasing is that sharp gasp right after the shot — the “kah!” — and the fact that the harshness makes whatever you eat next taste better.

So which side are you on, and can you honestly pass a blind taste test?
