I know without context the title sounds confusing, but hear me out.
BTS came from a tiny company that was barely surviving. Like any group, they obviously dreamed of success, but they were also being realistic, back then, making it big when you weren’t from one of the big 3 companies was pretty much unheard of.
Because of that, BTS just… did their thing. They put out tons of content. Some of it maybe feels a little ‘cringy’ looking back, but it made them feel real. You could see them having fun, being a little messy, not always perfectly polished. Sure, sometimes they were putting on a show, but you could tell a lot of it was just them being carefree.
This ended up being one of their biggest strengths. Now, Kpop companies try to replicate that vibe because they realize how much fans connect to it. But it’s way more manufactured these days. You can usually tell when idols are “acting” for the camera, because now every move is so heavily policed by public opinion.
Now, while I still like a lot of K-pop groups and enjoy variety shows, I honestly prefer watching idols just go live because of this. The whole “manufactured personality” thing kind of turns me off. And it’s not even a dig at other groups, even BTS aren’t immune to it now. It’s just not really possible anymore for idols to be that carefree. One wrong word and they get dragged endlessly. You can tell a lot of them are scared to really show themselves.
