U Jangchoon (U Nagaharu) was a Japanese-Korean biologist and agricultural scientist.

He achieved great results in breeding research. However, his most significant achievement lies elsewhere. He is the originator of U’s Triangle, the theory of species synthesis, which he proposed and proved, leading to a modification of the theory of evolution. It is a theory that different species can interbreed, and through this, a third species may be born. He is one of the people who changed science textbooks. Nevertheless, his most important scientific accomplishment came from Japan.

His background is complex. His mother was Japanese. His father was Korean, but his father betrayed his home country and was assassinated by another Korean because of this. He was raised in Japan solely by his Japanese mother.

Despite this, he was a Korean nationalist, influenced by one of his university friends. This is evident just from the fact that he kept his Korean surname on his papers.

When Korea gained independence, he entered South Korea to serve the country. He left the following statement: “Until now, I worked as hard as any Japanese for Japan, the country of my mother. From now on, I will do my best for Korea, the country of my father, and I will be buried in this land.”

At the time, Korea was suffering from famine due to food shortages. He researched and disseminated strains of various crops that were suitable for Korea’s environment across the entire nation. He researched the most effective farming methods for Korea and educated the entire nation on them.

He served Korea throughout his life until his death. He is recognized for having made a tremendous contribution in helping the Republic of Korea escape from severe famine in the early days of its newly established government.
