The controversy started when the bakery owner casually shared on Threads that they had been collecting discarded Styrofoam coolers from the street, wiping them down, and using them to package and ship baked goods to online customers. The owner seems to have intended to present this as an eco-friendly practice or a clever way to save on operating costs. However, the internet’s reaction was immediate and overwhelmingly negative. Korean netizens were shocked by the complete lack of food safety standards, pointing out that boxes retrieved from residential trash piles could easily be contaminated with pests, bacteria, or street grime—something no amount of wiping could truly sanitize for direct food delivery. As the criticism intensified and news outlets began picking up the story, the owner posted an official apology on August 31st. They admitted that using discarded packaging was a reckless oversight, confessed to a complete lack of awareness regarding hygiene protocols, and promised to only use brand-new, factory-sealed coolers for future shipments.
